When I think about the red house, I wonder if it had to be the last building, if the volunteers couldn't have saved this one building until it was the only one left to save. Momentum can be hard to come by, and the last chance focuses the effort. There's a kind of urgency to the endling that's different from the last thirty, or even the last four, then three, then two. So often we can't hold onto the one until we have lost the many.

Mostly when I have thought about eggs, if I have thought about them at all, it has been as symbols, as beginnings. Only here does it occur to me that they are easily read in reverse, as finality, as the punctuation to some other process, some other series of events.

Anybody want a tarot deck?

I bought the Light Seer deck this winter, and it isn't working for me somehow. It's a perfectly good deck, but I'm not connecting with it.

It's a contemporary deck with decent racial diversity, but I'll warn you upfront that everyone in it seems very young; that might be why I can't relax into it. You can see some of the cards at the Comparative Tarot tumblr. I have deck, book, and original box.

I always worry that I'm giving unfair advantage to people in the same time zone as me, so how about an anonymous ranked-choice poll? Let's see how this works. Responses should be anonymous. I'll keep it open for 24 hours and then contact the winner.

Over city, village, and lonely farm
that old stone, the cold moon
rises, glows
with its borrowed light.

Trees scrawl last words on the sky,
erased by darkness.

Nearly a year ago I posted about having a dream that Fraser was removing a full face of theatrical makeup from RayK. Today that finally finds its way into a story. Many thanks to [personal profile] fox for beta.

The makeup remover from Fraser’s kit smelled unscented. Which was not the same as not having any smell, but at least there wasn’t any pregnant mucus this time. Where Fraser was involved, you had to be thankful for small blessings, smellwise.

Noon silence, and the sun is high.
The cattle drift away,
jigsaw pieces of black and white,
fragmented through trees.
