Title: Threat and Respect
Author:

Rating: G
Characters: Will, Norrington.
Summary: Another side-effect of re-watching PotC. "This is a beautiful sword...." What Will is thinking. Mutual respect. Allusions to the deleted scene - it doesn't happen here, but there's the hint that it could have. Unlike many of my fics, this is sane.
112. Threat and Respect
"Mr Turner. This is a beautiful sword. I would expect the man who made it to show the same care and devotion in every aspect of his life."
Lingering around the edges of his words lies the threat that if Will does not make her happy, then the Commodore will be seriously displeased. Even now, with all that's happened, that's not something to be taken lightly.
With the threat, though, comes respect - the acknowledgment of this young man as… just that - a man. Not a boy, not the blacksmith's apprentice; but a skilled craftsman in his own right, whose work may be recognised. And appreciated.
Coming from someone he has always had reason to admire and envy - and toward whom his recent actions have been so highly reprehensible, that respect matters.
Will is honoured - not quite humbled because he is still young and full of himself, but his conscience tells him he doesn't deserve it. Disrespect merits nothing but the same in return, and when all is said and done Norrington would be perfectly within his rights to have him hung. No-one would question the decision.
That the Commodore should instead let this treasure go so freely, and trust Will with the safekeeping of it - it's worth a lot to him.
"Thank you." Respect in return. Pride, confidence; the determination not to fail in this charge, and the certainty that he will not.
Norrington remains watching him for a moment longer, and Will gets the impression he is debating whether or not to speak further. In the end, the Commodore simply nods once, and departs.
