Title: A Love Story
Author: [personal profile] order_of_chaos
Characters: OMC/OFC, Jack Sparrow, Sea.
Summary: A retelling, in it's way, of the Little Mermaid.  But not at all, not really.  A fairystory of Jack's parents.
AN: Not exactly inspired by (but not exactly not), [personal profile] elessil's Sea Men, and [profile] oasis_herself's Fish Tale.  And Gillette's line about mermaids, naturally.

***
She fell in love with a man with dark hair and dark eyes and a grin that lit his entire face.  Who was sweet and gentle and irrationally stubborn, and who loved her back with all his heart.
She was a mermaid; he wasn’t.
They asked the sea, of course, for the sea was her mother, and had loved and nurtured her since her first breath of water.  The answer came on the whisper of the tides - yes.

Legs took time to get used to; they were awkward and clumsy and she might have hated them, but her lover was there, and he picked her up and spun her round and said “come, let’s go swimming,” with that bright, bright grin on his face.  So she didn’t.  And later, after they’d watched the sun set over the sea, he spread her out on the sand and gently nibbled her from the soles of her feet to her knees to her inner thighs, until she called him all kinds of bad names and admitted that legs weren’t so bad after all.  Then they made love to each other in the moonlight, and the sea looked on and smiled.

Their child had his father’s eyes, his mother’s slender build and mischief enough for both of them.  She called him Jack, after his father, and his father called him Sparrow because he moved and laughed so freely, but also because someday he would fly away, and they would love him enough to let him go.
The ocean just called him her own, and never needed more than that.

When Jack was ten, he stowed away on a passing ship, a merchant vessel bound for parts both known and unknown.  His mother stood looking out over the sea for a long time, then bent and touched her hand to the water.  “Take care of him,” she murmured softly.
“Yes,” answered the waves on the shore.  “I promise.”

Months passed, then seasons, and the woman who was once a mermaid spent much of it at the edge of the sea, waiting, her husband a steady presence at her side.  Summer passed, then autumn; then one day, not quite winter, he tilted his head and grinned at her – his own beautiful, vibrant grin, undimmed but not untouched by sorrow – and turned to face the horizon.   “Shall we?” he asked, and she smiled back at him and caught his hand. Together, they walked into the water.

Not so long after, the two could be seen heading for the depths of the ocean; she, laughing with unrestrained delight and spinning loops around her husband; he, stubbornly working through the complications of swimming with a tail, once in a while pausing just to watch her be happy.

It was a good ending if any ever was, but it wasn't the end.

It's just so beautiful and the style is perfectly balanced between fairytale-wistfulnes and avoiding-being-sickly. *snuggles fic*

Ooh! So pretty. I love the pictures of each of them learning to use the unfamiliar body parts--legs and tails. That just made me smile delightedly. And I love the naming of Jack Sparrow. Such a beautiful, happy fairy-tale--makes me want a tail and a chance to go swimming in the ocean.

The good [livejournal.com profile] order_of_chaos, so often copied but never reached. This is truly brilliant, dear. So well written - and so logical.
